What will my results tell me?
Approximately one-in-five people have high levels of Lp(a) that are genetically inherited (around 80-90%) from birth. As these high levels of Lp(a) travel through the bloodstream, it collects in the arteries, causing them to narrow. This can increase the risk of clots, strokes, or a heart attack — even in seemingly healthy individuals. After your sample is collected and analyzed, you will be able to use your results report to engage with your cardiologist for further diagnosis and treatments such as apheresis or supplements for Lp(a).
Who should take this test?
Any adult can test their Lipoprotein(a) levels to better understand their risk factors for a future cardiovascular event, but Lp(a) is not commonly tested as part of routine blood work. This test is ideal if:
- You or a family member had a heart attack at a young age while in apparent good health
- A member of your immediate family has been diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia
- There is a family history of elevated Lp(a)
