This at-home test kit measures lipoprotein(a), an important genetic risk factor for cardiovascular disease that isn't revealed by standard cholesterol testing.

What this test measures

One in five Americans have lipoprotein(a) levels high enough to put them at greater risk for heart disease and stroke.

Who should get tested

Lp(a) levels are strongly influenced by your genes. You may wish to check your levels if you have:

  • A family member who died suddenly of heart attack or stroke, especially when young and healthy
  • A family member with premature vascular disease or familial hypercholesterolemia
  • Heart disease symptoms such as heart palpitations, feeling faint, chest pain, weight gain, leg pain or fatigue

Collection method - Finger prick sample

Our kits require just a few drops of blood from the fingertip, a clinically-validated method that is just as accurate (and typically less painful) than conventional blood collection. Afraid of needles? The needle on our lancet stays hidden until collection is complete.

Frequently
asked questions

How much does a lipoprotein(a) test cost?

A lipoprotein(a) test from imaware costs $79, and can help determine if you’re at greater risk for heart disease and stroke.

What will my results tell me?

Approximately one-in-five people have high levels of Lp(a) that are genetically inherited (around 80-90%) from birth. As these high levels of Lp(a) travel through the bloodstream, it collects in the arteries, causing them to narrow. This can increase the risk of clots, strokes, or a heart attack — even in seemingly healthy individuals. After your sample is collected and analyzed, you will be able to use your results report to engage with your cardiologist for further diagnosis and treatments such as apheresis or supplements for Lp(a).

Who should take this test?

Any adult can test their Lipoprotein(a) levels to better understand their risk factors for a future cardiovascular event, but Lp(a) is not commonly tested as part of routine blood work. This test is ideal if:

  • You or a family member had a heart attack at a young age while in apparent good health
  • A member of your immediate family has been diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia
  • There is a family history of elevated Lp(a)

Who can order an imaware test?

This test is only for adults aged 18 and older. Unfortunately, this test is not available in the state of New York due to state regulations.

Can my doctor use imaware results?

Yes. All of our tests are performed by CLIA-certified labs, the gold standard in lab testing quality regulation. Within your results report you will also find detailed information intended for your healthcare professional. They can use this information to interpret your test results clearly. To see an example of this, you can request a sample report at the top of this page.

How should I prepare for this test?

No fasting is required, simply collect your sample and return it via delivery carrier on the same day.

Are imaware results as accurate as traditional lab test?

Yes. Not only are your results as accurate as traditional lab tests, but we’re actually the first at-home small volume blood testing company to have our data and methods peer-reviewed by the scientific and medical community — which helps validate our claims and our results reports. Learn more about the exact science behind imaware tests.

How do I receive my test results?

You’ll receive an email from us within 7 business days of your sample return. The email will contain a link to view and download your test results on our secure digital health platform once they’ve been analyzed by our labs and reviewed by a doctor.
