This test measures two key diabetes-specific biomarkers

This test measures both hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and glucose to determine if you are likely to have and/or develop type 1 or type 2 Diabetes¹. Measuring HbA1c provides information about your average sugar levels over the past 2-3 months, and glucose provides information about your immediate sugar levels at the time of testing.

What is diabetes and prediabetes?

Diabetes is one of the most common health conditions in America, affecting over 34 million people — and 1 in 5 don’t know they have it³. With diabetes, the body does not properly process the food we eat into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy.

When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin efficiently, which causes sugars to build up in your blood.

Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be identified as diabetes.

The benefit to early testing

Progression from prediabetes to diabetes isn't inevitable. Certain lifestyle changes can bring your blood sugar back to normal — such as eating healthy foods, incorporating physical activity in your daily routine and maintaining a healthy weight⁵,⁷.

Some individuals with diabetes can also make dietary changes that allow them to maintain normal sugar levels without medications.

Early testing is the best way to determine if you need to make such changes to your lifestyle, and potentially stop the condition from worsening.

Prediabetes/Diabetes Test FAQ's

Who can order an imaware™ test?

This test is only for adults aged 18 and older. Unfortunately, this test is not available in the state of New York due to state regulations.

Why should I be routinely tested for prediabetes?

Proactively discovering you are prediabetic can give you an opportunity to make healthy lifestyle changes to help you avoid type 2 diabetes and its more severe life-changing symptoms. Read more about how to reverse prediabetes.

What’s the difference between prediabetes and diabetes?

Prediabetes is characterized by elevated blood sugar metrics like Hemoglobin A1c and fasting plasma glucose levels. Those with prediabetes will have higher levels than normal, but not high enough to indicate a diagnosis of diabetes. Most people who get diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were initially prediabetic, possibly for years, without ever knowing it. Read more about prediabetes.

What will my results tell me?

This test measures both hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and glucose levels over the last 2-3 months to help identify your likelihood of having or developing type 1 or type 2 diabetes. If this is your first test and you find that your glucose and hbA1c levels are unusually high, you can use your results report to engage with a medical professional.

Who should take this test?

There are a multitude of risk factors for diabetes, so this test is ideal for those who:

  • Do little to no exercise
  • Have a high sugar/red meat and low whole grain/vegetable diet
  • Have poor sleeping habits (less than 8 hours a day)
  • Are 45+
  • Are of Latino, Indigenous, Black, or Pacific Islander heritage
  • Are already showing signs of elevated cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Are exhibiting signs of insulin resistance and abnormal blood sugar readings
  • Are experiencing excessive thirst or urination

This test is also ideal for those who are currently prediabetic and need to monitor their HbA1c and glucose levels to gain visibility on reversing prediabetes. Read more about how to reverse prediabetes.

Can my doctor use imaware™ results?

Yes. All of our tests are performed by CLIA-certified labs, the gold standard in lab testing quality regulation. Within your results report you will also find detailed information intended for your healthcare professional. They can use this information to interpret your test results clearly. How should I prepare for this test?
